GENETICS

Q. In mono-hybrid cross of Mendel, when a pure tall plant was crossed with dwarf plant, all the F1 progeny were tall, because of:
  [WBCS Preliminary Exam-2015]

  1. Co-dominance
  2. Dominance
  3. Incomplete dominance
  4. Epistasis

B. Dominance

Explanation:

If a pure tall plant was crossed with dwarf plant, genotype of F1 progeny will be Tt.
Phenotype of all F1 progeny will be tall.
Here, one trait (tall) conceal the presence of another trait (dwarf) because of Dominance.

Q. Phenotypic ratio of Mendelian Dihybrid cross is
   [WBCS Preliminary 2015]

  1. 9:3:3:1
  2. 1:1:1:1
  3. 3:4:3:1
  4. 1:2:1:1

A. 9:3:3:1

Explanation:
Phenotypic ratio of Mendelian Dihybrid cross is 9:3:3:1.

Here, we are taking two characteristics (since, dihybrid cross).

For 1st Characteristics:
'R' is dominant and 'r' is recessive.
For 2nd Characteristics
'A' is dominant and 'a' is recessive.

The phenotypic ratio of dihybrid cross is 9:3:3:1
From the above table, we can conclude the following
  • There are 9 combinations that display both dominant characteristics
  • There are 3 combinations that display first dominant characteristic and second recessive characteristic.
  • There are 3 combinations that shows first recessive and second dominant characteristics
  • There are only 1 combination that shows both recessive characteristics.
Therefore, phenotypic ratio of Mendelian Dihybrid cross is 9:3:3:1.

Q. A pure Red flower bearing plant is crossed with pure white flower and the F1 plant bears pink flowers. This is an example of
  [WBCS Preliminary Exam-2016]

  1. Pseudo dominance
  2. Dominance
  3. Epistasis
  4. Co-dominance

Incomplete Dominance

Explanation:
Dominance: In phenotypic characteristics, when one allele suppressed another, the phenomenon is known as Dominance.
The allele which suppressed another is known as dominant.
Suppressed allele is recessive.

Co-dominance: When two allele related to a particular trait exhibit its properties (i.e. no one is suppressed another), the phenomenon is called Co-dominance.

Pseudo-dominance: We know that a recessive allele to be expressed, both allele should be recessive i.e. homozygous recessive.
But there is a situation wherein only one recessive allele inherited and yet is expressed.  This phenomenon is known as Pseudo-dominance.

Incomplete dominance: In incomplete dominance, two allele inherited from parental generation form a new hybrid trait.

In Co-dominance, two allele are expressed but in Incomplete dominance two allele form new hybrid trait.

Here, Pure Red flowers bearing plant is crossed with a pure White flower and the F1 plant bears Pink flowers.
So, from Red and White a new hybrid Pink is formed. So, this is an example of Incomplete dominance.
